Barry, get better soon so you can harass me from across the court. Nothing would make me happier. All the best, Daniel

Barry, you continue to rule. Remember Romans 8:26

Thank God. I hope the doctors isolate the source of the malady, so they can focus on the proper treatment. Keep the faith!

Dear Barry & Bonnie,
I John 2:27
“As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as this anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing, is real, not counterfeit just as it has taught you, remain in Him.“

Ones mouth has to line up with ones soul- Guard it!

Our prayer for you is:
Commanding, the cancer to leave.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” -Matthew 11:

Dear Berry and Bonnie,

I wrote to Dr. Walker after learning about your cancer diagnosis. I wanted to share the note with you and the family as it captures my gratitude for how Barry cared for Vela and all the other young ladies who played for him.

The whole McBride clan is keeping you in our prayers daily.

Love and light,

Patrick

Good afternoon Dr. Walker,

Our daughter Vela McBride played volleyball for Coach Barry, and my wife Cindy and I had the honor of helping out occasionally- we live close by in Reston, VA.

I can’t overstate the positive impact Barry had, and still has on Vela. She came to AU after committing to Navy. She had some anxiety issues in her senior year of high school and the end result was that the Naval Academy was not a good fit for her.

In her first semester at AU Vela excelled on the court, but struggled off the court with anxiety and balancing her academic load. From an inauspicious start in her first semester, she went on to excel academically and is now working on her Masters of Public Health at Northeastern University.

Whenever things got tough for Vela, or any of her teammates for that matter, the best advice was always “go talk with Coach Barry.” This was universally good advice because Coach Barry cared so much about his student-athletes and just had a way of uncomplicating things for them. He always gave them a boost of confidence and made sure they had and were using, the resources they needed. He just had a way.

I am sharing our story because I’m sure you know about Barry’s illness. I would like to find some time next week to talk with you about ways to honor him. You and the AU athletic family may already be considering ideas. I know Coach Goldberg is already in the AU HoF, so maybe something like naming the new athletic facility after him, or making the Volleyball Court the Coach Goldberg court would be a fitting tribute to an exemplary coach.

I know you and the AU Athletic team have a very good understanding of Barry’s unparalleled AU coaching success. Just looking into the Bender Arena rafters is a pretty good reminder. I just wanted to remind everyone that Barry’s real impact on his student-athletes runs far deeper than the Patriot League championships and NCAA bids. He has had a profoundly positive impact on so many of his players. We witnessed this firsthand with Vela and her teammates and heard more stories from former athletes at the HoF dinner/ceremony.

The care Coach Goldberg showed Vela, and so many other athletes that were more troubled, combined with the example he set as a coach and counselor deserves lasting and visible recognition in my humble opinion.

I look forward to discussing this further with you and exploring ways Cindy and I may be able to help.

Be well,

Patrick McBride

Barry,
I gotta believe all of your years as a coach and competitor has prepared you for this battle against cancer. No doubt behind that big smile is a fighter.
Keep fighting!
My prayers are with you.
